Training

There are several ways a Local 509 member are trained.

  1. Employer training: The employers may train a member at their shop. You would receive employer specific and or industry specific training that benefits both you and the employer. Some of this is governed by our CBA. New employees will receive proper on the job safety training by the employer to ensure yours and others safety.
  2. Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT): The LMCT is set up for participating employers’ members to receive training through approved outside training facilities. For the purpose of reimbursement of training you would get approval from the LMCT of industry specific training that would benefit your ability to advance in the trade.   3. Local 509:
    Additional training for members by Local 509 may be done to provide members with new skills that are needed for any changes to industry standards. The Local may work with the Employer or the LMCT to create this training. The local also provides:
    a.    Shop Steward Training
    b.    Negotiation Skills Training
    c.    Harassment Training
    d.    Safety (OSHA 10/30) General Industry
  4. Future training courses to be offered include:
    a.    Steel Fabrication
    b.    Welding
    c.    Machine Operating
    d.    CNC Operation
    e.    Machining
    f.    Blueprint Reading
    g.    And More!
